The Philippines is a country that is vulnerable to natural catastrophes. This is because of its geographical position near the equator or the typhoon belt and along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where typhoons, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and earthquakes often occur in the Pacific Ocean basin. I can still remember the time when me and my family experienced an earthquake while eating our breakfast. We stared at each other for so long. And when the earthquake finally stopped none of us dared to move because we are still waiting for aftershocks.

The National Risk Reduction and Management Council directs and encourages individuals to follow safety procedures and precautions and to engage in emergency drills, such as the National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill program.

Earthquakes are unpredictable. We can not predict when it will strike, unlike typhoons. The only thing we can do is brace for it and reduce the harm to our lives that it can cause. We should always take earthquake drills seriously. We need to be vigilant and know what to do before, during and after an earthquake, since we live along the Pacific Ring of Fire where most faults are active.
