Since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic back in March 2020, the virus has claimed more than 2.5 million lives globally with upwards of 113 million cases being confirmed by laboratory tests (March 2021).
The pandemic has had an impact on almost every aspect of life, causing global economies to stall, altering how we work and interact with our loved ones, and pushing healthcare systems to their breaking point. To stop the virus from spreading, governments all over the world have been forced to impose severe restrictions on human activity.
COVID-19 vaccination is now available as a way to exit this stage of the pandemic. Many scientists believe that without them, natural herd immunity would not have been sufficient to restore society to its previous state and that extreme fatality would have resulted. Many health organizations, including the World Health Organization, have echoed this sentiment. In the absence of vaccines, strict behavioral measures may have had to be maintained for the time being.
Fortunately, at the start of 2021, a slew of vaccines was given emergency approval and began rolling out in countries all over the world. Globally, just over 300 million vaccine doses had been administered as of March 2021. The figures point to a return to 'normalcy.' However, global COVID-19 vaccination faces a number of obstacles that could jeopardize its success.
Here I have pieces of information people should know before getting the vaccine. What people often ask is "what exactly is the best vaccine?" the answer to that is simple, the best COVID-19 vaccine is the first one that is available to you. Do not wait for a specific brand. All currently authorized and recommended COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, and reduce your risk of severe illness. All vaccines, no matter what brand, have side effects. These side effects are normal because it means that your body is building protection. These side effects may affect your ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. The common side effects are pain, redness, and swelling on the arm where you got the shot. You may also feel fever, nausea, chills, muscle pain, headache and tiredness. But still, even though there are many side effects, we still have to vaccinate because getting vaccinated is so much better than nothing.
I am encouraging everyone to get vaccinated so we can end the pandemic. As a service to yourself, your loved ones, and to your country, get vaccinated please. This is our first step to achieve herd immunity!
